...he makes his living selling paletts he finds. many people do this. probably not the best living. probably not enough to afford a home...
left work in a fuss. ran in to this guy a flew blocks down the road. i'd actually stopped to take a photo of a gap between buildings. he was in there rummaging around for stuff. came out with a (probbaly broken) palm pilot which he wanted to sell me. i have no use for a palm pilot and no money to buy one. even an old broken one.
we talked for a little, i asked if i could take his photo. he was reluctant but agreed.
i feel stupid using my digital as a light meter when i'm photographing people. "this is not the photo" i told him as i took a photo for exposure. i think i was at f5.6 and approx 1/200. i know i stopped it down some more after i was originally at f8... wanted the buildings to go soft. they did.
at first i was upset with myself for not positioning him well in the frame. he's at an awkward spot in the building edge. after spending some time with the image i don't mind it as much. i spent quite a deal of time on this photo.. mostly because this scanner is junk. colours were all off.. then at the last moment i went b/w anyway. haha.. caused the bg to blow out but i don't mind that here. deep contrast works. the info is there, though.
anyway. i want to take more photos like this. not necessarily posed, but of real people doing real things. and on film if possible. film is great.
end of story. let me know what you think of this take. i owe this man a print next time i see him.. i'd love to pass along some people's comments as well!
yashica, fuji 400 color, ~5.6/200, scan of print @ 1200dpi, b/w via channel mix, dodge/burn/sharpen
here are a few others i've taken so far:
the man who moves pallets 1 : (yashica C, 120 film)
the man who moves pallets 2 : [link] (canon 20D, digital)
the man who moves pallets 3 : [link] (nikon fm2)
This defintly one of the best of your shots I've seen so far. Love the story also.
I love the idea of taking pictures of real people, just like they are... Photography is for those kind of messages the best media, in my opinion. One shot can tell everything. And this a clear example. Just look at his expression. He wouldn't do that in front of a camera, in my opinion. It tells you so much, and yet nothing... and hands down....
that's beautiful, awsome portrait. i like the square format especially. film looks great. i must experiment with it...
one thing that i like about this is how he is portrayed. he actually looks quite dignified. i think because of the low angle. usually street folk like this are shown in a more negative light.
dig - it's fabulous...don't worry about using the digital thing - I'll be doing the same thing very, very soon....you could always guess and do the "human light meter" thing that take a lot of practice....but that would require a decent amount of extra film too....
claytes, this is one of the best portraits i've ever seen.
-the sheer intracacies of the unfocused forms of the background.
-distinctive and framing, yet lacking the focus which is directed
at the man himself, in his excellent, natural, sturdy pose.
greatshot, definitely
